30 DAYS OF NIGHT dust to dust online comic

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 12, 2009, 6:21 PM
the example

A while back I illustrated a 1 off 30 Days of Night comic called Dust to Dust in conjunction with IDW, GhostHouse Pictures and FearNet which was then launched at this years Comic-con in San Diego. Anyways, it looks like FearNet have updated their website because you can now check out the entire book for free here [link] (cover art by Ben Templesmith, interior art by me).
And if you want to watch the short film of the same title you can check it out here [link] (starring Shawnee Smith from the Saw movies).

I've been going out of my comfort zone lately and trying to color and illustrate more like some people that do fantastic work, but isn't really my style like Nei Ruffino. She is amazing, but very smooth and bright and pretty and not really my style, however I've learned a lot. I know you're thinking "what the hell does this have to do with me?" well I'm getting to that. After watching several LiveStreams and things like that I've learned that a lot of digital artists use very basic simple dark flats and then just highlight the colors until they look appropriate, so I wanted to commend you inspiring me and others to work with our "flats" as a full on grey tonal watercolor. And then highlight and make all of the coloring work, but focusing on texture and shading and different things that I think are sometime overlooked by conventional illustrators (not Nei I'm not throwing her under the bus she is amazing actually, she's just someone I talk to a lot). So Cheers yet again Justin!

Hey Justin! It's just me again. I've been playing around with Photoshop some more and am starting to understand how to throw things together, half way accurately, but I was wondering how do you do your faces? They are always so precise and realistic and perfect. Do you use certain modes or blending methods or anything specific? Anything would help. I love your attention to detail on characters. Cheers!

I often use a combination of photo's I've taken, combined with hand painting and Photoshop. The most delicate part of the face is often the nose so I'll often use photo elements (fading out from the nose as a central point).

Well that makes total sense. I always have the most problems with the nose looking realistic. I will definitely have to play around with that some as the results of yours are immaculate. Thanks as always for responding and with such detail. Can't wait for Changing Ways!

no probs and apologies on the late replies, my brain is cooked :)

You know you should really change your name to "Justin the Australian Ass Kicker" because anytime I try to search any info on you outside of dA, I get all results for Justin Timberlake. Apparently his middle name is Randall and there is almost no way to filter out all of that garbage. All I wanted was to see a video or pic of sketches you did at a con, or something, but instead I got the shame of all that was once the music industry. THought I would share that bit of insanity with you. Can't wait to see the Changing Ways book come to life.
